People love being comfortable with anything they do. They love being happy, they love being able to handle their affairs with little or no stress. They create a world for themselves where they do just enough to stay afloat. Many have big dreams but end up achieving only little because the demands of getting there involve taking steps outside their comfort level.
Sometimes, when you tell a friend about a new and exciting activity or discovery you would like them to try, you see them panic and say something like “am happy with where I am and what I’ve got. I don’t think I really want that”. The thought of having to leave their place of comfort and going into unknown territory is very difficult for them.
People who have gone far in life and have achieved a lot are people who have found a way of being comfortable doing uncomfortable things. They stepped outside their comfort zone.
The most common reason why people find it difficult to step out of the comfort zone is fear. They have a lot of potentials but are contented with little because they are afraid of making new friends, taking that job, trying out for that spot and so on.
Staying in your comfort zone can be good sometimes but there is so much more you can do when you take that bold step and try new things.
Some Importance of Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
Have you ever looked back with regret and wished “if only I took that dance class”. It may not be dancing but you get the point. Stepping outside your comfort zone and trying new things will save you from regrets later in life. You can boldly say “at least I did what I had to back then. I tried. Even though it didn’t work out like I wanted it to, but I took the step and am glad I did”. You must understand that tomorrow was not promised to anyone. So, we have to take a chance and hope for the best.
It’s worth it
How will you feel if you were to suddenly meet the president? I bet it will be a wonderful experience. Many people will cringe and be like “what will I say, it’s the president. I don’t think I can get myself to face him”, I know the president is up there but it wouldn’t be a big deal if you have been doing things outside your comfort zone. I know someone reading this is laughing and saying “it’s quite a big deal meeting the president. Am already getting the shakes from just imagining it”. Learning to be comfortable outside your comfort zone especially in the area of communication and building relationships will build your confidence. It will help you handle difficult situations well.
You can start learning with the people around you. It may be uncomfortable at first but it’s worth it. In the end, you will be glad you took that step.
To grow in this context means to become better and better. Stepping outside your comfort zone gives you experience which makes you better handle a similar situation next time. It eliminates fear and you become more open, free and able to bring out the best in you. You are capable of doing many amazing things. It’s not easy to step out of your comfort zone but if you keep at it, you will get better and it will eventually become easier.
Sometimes things will not go well at all and you end up being negatively affected. Don’t give up and go back into your shell. Negative outcomes help us learn what to avoid next time.
Give yourself a break from your daily routine and try something new. Live life and give yourself the best. The world is waiting to see the best version of you.
